What are we?

Got a question for you…what time do you get to work?  I am willing to bet that you arrive at work around the same time everyday.  Why do you do this?  How is it possible to be so consistent in one area of life and inconsistent in another?  Well, the truth is, we are all consistent regardless of what we choose to do.

So, let’s look at what is consistent in your life.  We’ve already established that you are consistent with the time you get to work.  And if I dive even further, I would bet that you typically go to sleep around the same time and wake up around the same time.  Your life is  structured around habits.  Good habits and bad habits.  It doesn’t matter.  They are all habits.

The three things to focus on in establishing habits are Initiation, Follow Through, and Consistency.  Initiation means starting the event and understanding why you want to begin it in the first place.  Follow Through is required because it allows you to finish what you started – working your plan. Once Initiation and Follow Through are completed, you have established a successful event in your mind.  The last step is Consistency.  This involves understanding and internalizing that you’ve already done what you set out to do! So now all you have to do it repeat the process.

Let’s build some successful habits by answering the following questions:

1.  What are my most successful habits in my life?

2.  How can I leverage my existing successful habits to make more successful habits in my life?

3.  What support do I need to achieve successful habits? Let’s be real.  We all want to be successful.

The ONLY way to achieve success is to have successful habits.  Life is a collection of our behaviors; a collection of our habits.  To change our lives, we have to change our habits.  To change our habits, we have to change our behavior.  This is why Aristotle said “We are what we repeatedly do.  Excellence, then is not an act, but a habit.”

Remember, if you can do it once…you can do it again.
